Lesson overview

Large language models learn which brands belong together from the contexts in which they are mentioned. Co-citation is the practice of making sure your brand appears alongside the people and companies that LLMs already trust in your space. This lesson takes a tactical look at how to build those associations deliberately and genuinely, so AI systems start to read your brand as part of the same authoritative group.

What this lesson covers

  • What co-citation means in the context of LLM reputation management
  • How to identify the authority entities that LLMs already cite in your industry
  • Comparison, alternative and roundup content that positions your brand next to established names
  • Using schema to declare relationships with those entities
  • Taking part in real conversations on Reddit, forums and LinkedIn without being promotional
  • Three types of partnership that create endorsed, explicit associations

The first step is a form of reverse engineering. You test a set of industry questions in assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot and note which brands and people they mention. Those names become your target entities for association. Next, you create content that naturally places your entity beside theirs: comparison pages, alternative guides, expert roundups and category content, always linked back to your knowledge graph with schema that declares the relationships.

The lesson then turns to participation. Joining discussions where your target entities are already being talked about takes effort, yet it has a large payoff. The emphasis is on adding value: mentioning other tools as well as your own, and explaining your reasoning. Spam and overt promotion are ruled out. Over time this creates a pattern of your brand appearing in the same context as recognised authorities, and LLMs pick up on such patterns. Finally, partnerships are presented as the strongest signal because they declare an official relationship. The lesson covers technical integrations, co-created content with recognised experts or companies, and joint case studies with shared customers, and suggests aiming for one strategic partnership with an established player each quarter. The principle behind all of this is borrowed authority: when your entity is repeatedly seen next to trusted ones, LLMs can infer authority by association.

This lesson belongs to the Building Brand Authority for LLM Success module, which focuses on turning entity work into visibility and citations in AI answers. It suits SEOs, content strategists and brand teams who want a structured, ethical approach to building reputation signals for LLMs.
